Frontal Lobe Injury

Frontal Lobe Brain Injury
San Francisco Bay Area · Los Angeles · San Diego

The frontal lobe is in the front portion of the brain. It is the largest lobe and like the temporal lobe sits within a pocket-like bone in the skull. It is responsible for higher-level thinking including planning, personality, and judgment, and the motor processes required for speech. People often focus on the higher-level thinking aspect of the frontal lobe, overlooking its important role in enabling us to speak. If an area within the frontal lobe (called Broca's Area) is injured, the injury may cause expressive aphasia; a condition where, even though a person can understand others' speech without much difficulty, that person cannot form words. Further, the frontal lobe aids in the primary motor control of the body. As such, another of its jobs is to transform our mental desire to move into actual physical movement.

Injuries to this part of the brain have serious consequences. They include loss of the ability to move parts of the body (paralysis), loss of flexible thinking and the ability to be spontaneous with others, persistence of a single thought in one's mind, the aforementioned expressive aphasia, and loss of the ability to complete processes as simple as making coffee.
